One of the many lakes in Salzburg, Austria along the Salzkammergut cycle path

At the northern edges of the Northern Limestone Alps, to the east of the Mozart city of Salzburg, sprinkled with ten famous lakes such as Wolfgangsee, Mondsee, Attersee, Traunsee and Hallstätter See, the Salzkammergut offers excellent conditions for exciting cycling tours.

The Dachstein Mountain and Emperor Franz Joseph
Both have influenced and continue to influence the landscape to this day. One towers almost 3,000 metres into the heavens, crowned by an impressive cliff-face, coated with ice and just as unfathomable as has been seen on some of the Cave expeditions. The emperor was so impressed by the landscape in the region that he transferred his summer domicile from Vienna to Bad Ischl and built a flamboyant, neo-classical villa there so he would be able to rule over his empire from the town. His time here was not always spent for the good of the people as he signed the declaration of war against Serbia here which caused the First World War. Empress Elisabeth from Austro-Hungary, better known as "Sissi", spent a lot of time here.

The region gets its name from the former salt mining activities carried out there. Visitors can take an exciting trip through the old mines. Every trip to the Salzkammergut region wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the "Weißen Rössl" on the Wolfgangsee Lake and a trip tracing Mozart’s life in Salzburg. A World Heritage Site, astounding cultural and architectural richness and a particular flair: Salzburg is always worth a visit! The Mozart cycle path starts off at the house of his birth in Getreidegasse and continues into neighbouring Bavaria, to Berchtesgaden and to Lake Chiemsee.
